"Consider Clover" Campaign
the Eco-friendly lawn replacement
Parliament Hill
Thursday, March 15, 2001

Environmentalists, faith groups, health advocates, politicians and gardeners joined interests on Parliament Hill today for the launch of "Consider Clover", a national campaign urging the use of clover lawns as an eco-friendly alternative to chemically-dependent grass.

The campaign initiators, United Church minister Rev. Ellie Barrington and Quaker Peggy Land (Physiotherapist, and member of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment), were joined by Charles Caccia M.P. (Chair, Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Sustainability), Marlene Jennings M.P. (Private Member's Bill C-267 on Pesticides) and gardening expert Ed Lawrence (CBC Radio and the National Capital Commission) on Parliament Hill, the grounds of which have been pesticide-free since 1995.

"We can heal our relationship with our own bit of earth by planting clover again in our lawns"

"Renewal of the Earth is this year's Canadian Ecumenical Jubilee focus and clover is the perfect Jubilee crop" said Peggy Land, an enthusiastic eco-gardener. "We can heal our relationship with our own bit of earth by planting clover again in our lawns. It's very hardy, needs no toxic chemicals and is virtually maintenance-free. Sowing clover is an easy earth-friendly action that seems to strike a chord with people right now. The seeds are spreading already through e-mail networks!"

"Sowing clover is a statement of our environmental and faith values, right in our own front yards."

"The Shamrock, a form of clover, has been a spiritual symbol in many cultures for centuries and it is also the epitome of 'green'," adds Rev. Barrington. "St. Patrick's Day seems the right moment to launch this Jubilee environmental initiative. Sowing clover is a statement of our environmental and faith values, right in our own front yards."

"Consider Clover" is endorsed by a growing number of environmental, faith, medical and gardening groups who are helping to spread the seeds across Canada though their personal networks and web-sites, church and neighbourhood groups.

Barrington and Land have prepared a Consider Clover "how-to" e-brochure which can be viewed here as an HTML document or downloaded here as a pdf file.
