Londoners Rent Billboard
To Send Anti-Pesticide Message

Council of Canadians

Press Release

To Pesticide Fighters Everywhere,

In London, a Coalition of groups has been formed to get The City of London to ban the cosmetic spraying of pesticides on private property. The coalition consists of Londoners Educating About Pesticides (LEAP), The Thames Regional Ecological Association (TREA), and The Council of Canadians - London Chapter. Our efforts are carefully timed to coincide with the upcoming decision by the Supreme Court on the Hudson, Quebec case in June.

"we are purchasing a large outdoor billboard on a busy street leading to an affluent London suburb... it will say "IS YOUR LAWN GIVING YOU CANCER?"

In addition to the vigourous lobbying of London's city councillors, and the massive public awareness campaign already begun, we are purchasing a large outdoor billboard on a busy street leading to an affluent London suburb. The sign will consist of a striking colour picture of an idyllic house on a large lawn with a person in full gear spraying. In the foreground will be a large standard "pesticide use" sign, and a child picking a dandelion. In large letters at the top it will say "IS YOUR LAWN GIVING YOU CANCER?".

It will be on display here for 28 days throughout May. The cost of the billboard will be about $1900, and we have already had many generous contributions, both from the groups mentioned and from the public.

We will take full advantage of any media it may attract. This billboard will be a springboard for a letter writing blitz to the local newspaper, articles by sympathetic journalists, displays at local garden show events, public forums, and any other thing that will attract attention.

This upcoming court decision presents us with a terrific window of opportunity that we plan to take full advantage of!

We here in London have been watching the info and discussion unfold on this list serve for a long time, and have found it to be an important source of valuable information. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this list serve for the inspiration and support.

Please help us with any suggestions or advice that can help us to achieve our goal. And wish us luck!
